G7 Scrambles to keep Climate Agenda on Track as Ukraine War Roils Energy Supplies

Image
Ministers from the world's wealthiest democracies will wrangle over how to keep climate change goals on track as they meet in Berlin on Thursday for talks overshadowed by spiralling energy costs and fuel supply worries sparked by the war in Ukraine. Energy, climate and environment ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) countries want to reaffirm a commitment to cap global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius and protect biodiversity at the May 25-27 meeting. The group will also consider committing to a phase-out of coal power generation by 2030, according to a draft communique seen by Reuters, though sources suggested that opposition from the United States and Japan could derail such a pledge. The draft, which could change considerably by the time talks conclude on Friday, would also commit G7 countries to have a "net zero electricity sector by 2035" and to start reporting publicly next year on how they are delivering on a past G7 commitment to end "inefficient" foss...

Ukraine May Soon Get Long-Range US Rocket System

Image
The US government appears close to sending a long-range multiple-rocket system (MLRS) to Ukraine. Russia sees such deliveries of heavy weapons as a provocative escalation. President Volodymyr Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials have urged delivery of the MLRS to counter Russia's heavy bombardments in the eastern Donbas region. Russia continues to pound Severodonetsk and other parts of Donbas with rockets, tanks and air strikes. Kyiv's forces are already using US-delivered M777 howitzers, which have a range of about 25km (16 miles). But the MLRS would allow Ukraine to reach targets much further away than that. An M270 MLRS battery can fire a range of munitions, with the most advanced able to hit targets up to 300km (186 miles) away. However, it can also fire shorter-range rockets with a range of around 70km (43  e mils). Limiting Ukraine to the smaller rockets could be a way for the US to avoid escalating the conflict, while still significantly improving Ukraine's arsenal...

Life in Ukraine's post-siege Mariupol: barter markets and Russian TV

Image
People are slowly starting to return to the streets of the southern Ukrainian city of Mariupol, pummeled by weeks of shelling from Russian forces and now fully under Russian control. On Monday, local residents charged electric devices from gene life-in-ukraines-post-siege-mariupol rators and exchanged food and clothes at impromptu street markets, while at an empty bus station Russian state television blared out from a giant screen brought in by officials. Lyuba, wearing sunglasses and a hat to protect her from the sun, said she was charging her phone. She had decided not to leave the city, although her apartment had been damaged. "There's no electricity, no water - things are really tough, of course." A man called Nikolai said he had also come to charge his phone, as there was no electricity available at the train station where he now lives. Neither gave family names. Some residents could be seen collecting essential products in boxes emblazoned with the pro-Russian ...

V&A to Host Exhibition on Coco Chanel’s Career and Designs

Image
The V&A is to host the first ever exhibition in a major UK museum on the work of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, covering the career of the French designer from the opening of her first millinery boutique in Paris in 1910 to the showing of her final collection in 1971. The London museum’s exhibition, Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto, will display 180 designs as well as jewellery, accessories and perfume, and outfits created for Lauren Bacall and Marlene Dietrich. And like much of Chanel’s work, the show is likely to be a blockbuster. It is organised into eight themes, and based on a show first displayed in Paris in 2020 and more recently in Melbourne. In addition to the pieces that are part of the touring exhibition, there will be outfits from the V&A’s collection which are rarely on display. Chanel is widely regarded as a pioneer of modern fashion, a woman who designed for herself – a radical concept in the early 20th-century France, where women did not have the right to vote unti...

Locked-down factory workers at an Apple supplier in Shanghai stormed a dormitory housing company management, reports say

Image
Locked-down factory workers at an Apple supplier in Shanghai stormed a dormitory housing company management in protest against their captivity, regional media reported. Taiwan-based Quanta Compute r, which makes MacBooks and other computers at a factory in Shanghai, sealed employees in worksite dormitories when the city entered COVID-19 lockdown in April. Since then, workers have been banned from leaving their dorms and seeing friends and family. A dispute over their captivity and pay prompted a large group of Quanta workers to last weekend storm a dormitory housing the company's Taiwanese managers, resulting in a lengthy standoff, according to regional media. Some Taiwanese staff members grasped umbrellas to use in self-defense should the protesters breach their dorm, according to China Times, a Chinese-language Taiwanese newspaper. Apple and Quanta Computer did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment. Factories across Shanghai have set up "closed-loo...

Tesla Officially Applies For More Land To Expand The Giga Berlin Plant

Image
Tesla Model Y production at the site now runs two shifts. Tesla Model Y production at the site now runs two shifts. According to the latest reports from Germany, Tesla proceeds forward to secure more land for the potential expansion of the Giga Berlin-Brandenburg plant in Grünheide near Berlin. In early May it was reported (unofficially) that Tesla is interested in an additional plot (100 hectare) adjacent to the already massive 300-hectare property. Yesterday, RBB24 revealed that Grünheide's Mayor Arne Christiani confirmed that Tesla has officially filed the application to acquire the land and expand its site. It does not automatically mean that Tesla will purchase the plot, but it's expected that now the local government will review the plans and decide. We guess that there is a high probability that Tesla will receive a green light for the expansion. Tesla Model Y production ramps-up Meanwhile, the production of the Made-in-Germany (MIG) Tesla Model Y has gradually increase...

News agencye Tass said that a system to launch the Tsirkon missile was being developed at the renowned rocket design bureau NPO Mashinostroyenia in Reutov, near Moscow, which Newsweek has contacted for comment. A military source told the agency that the coastal missile system is slated to enter service with the Russian Navy "by the end of 2022." Another source said the new system will have the capacity to strike both groun  Russia Develops Hypersonic Missile System To Up Ante in Ukraine War d- and sea-based targets. This would give it the same capability as its predecessor, the Bastion, which deploys Oniks supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles. Anatoly Svintsov, deputy general director of NPO Mashinostroeniya, told the Zvezda military TV channel that while there were aviation- and sea-based versions of the Tsirkon, ...

River Bank Erosion leaves Jaintapur Residents on Edge

Image
Bangladesh, May 26 -- Due to the continuous erosion of the Nayagang and Saburi rivers, roads, houses and crop lands in Jaintapur upazila of Sylhet have gone into the gorge of the rivers. Thousands of acres of arable lands, including hundreds of houses and rural roads in Barbhag, Mallifaud, Katakhal and Lamni villages are under threat due to river erosion. One and a half kilometers of Katakhal road has been devoured by the river. Due to the dam of Bangladesh Power Development Board (WAPDA), the Nayagang river is flowing at a faster speed than normal with strong current, threatening the houses of the people living along the river to face erosion. And so, blocks need to be set up urgently to protect the villages of Moakhai, Lamni, Katakhal and Mallifaud on the banks of the river. Otherwise, the people of these areas will suffer immense loss and the crop lands will be devoured by the river during floods. According to locals, many villagers are leaving their homes and moving to other places...

Pfizer offers to sell medicines at cost to poorest countries

US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer on Wednesday said it would sell its patented drugs on a not-for-profit basis to the world's poorest countries, as part of a new initiative announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos. "The time is now to begin closing this gap" between people with access to the latest treatments and those going without, chief executive Albert Bourla told attendees at the exclusive Swiss mountain resort gathering. "An Accord for a Healthier World" focuses on five areas: infectious diseases, cancer, inflammation, rare diseases and women's health -- where Pfizer currently holds 23 patents, including the likes of Comirnaty and Paxlovid, its Covid vaccine and oral treatment. "This transformational commitment will increase access to Pfizer-patented medicines and vaccines available in the United States and the European Union to nearly 1.2 billion people," Angela Hwang, group president of the Pfizer Biopharmaceuticals Group, told AFP. Boat Carrying Rohingya Fleeing Myanmar Capsizes, Killing 16

Image
At least 16 people from Myanmar’s Rohingya minority have died after a storm capsized the boat they were traveling on to seek refuge in another country, officials and a recovery team member said Tuesday . There were 35 survivors of Saturday's accident that took place Saturday off Myanmar’s southwestern coast and four people were missing, the officials said. UNHCR, the U.N.’s refugee agency , expressed shock and sadness about the accident in a statement and said at least 17 Rohingya, including children, had died. The boat left the western state of Rakhine last Thursday and encountered bad weather two days later off Ayeyarwaddy Region on Myanmar’s southwestern coast, causing it to capsize, the statement said. The Rohingya, a Muslim minority, have long been persecuted in Myanmar. More than 700,000 Rohingya have fled the country to neighboring Bangladesh since August 2017 to escape the brutal counterinsurgency campaign of Myanmar’s military following an attack by a Rohingya insurgent gr...

Four million people hit by floods in Bangladesh: UN

Image
Four million people have been affected by the worst floods in Bangladesh's northeast for nearly two decades, the United Nations said Monday. The Bangladeshi government said the floods, which began last week, had submerged 70 percent of Sylhet district in the northeast and 60 percent of Sunamganj district, leaving at least 10 people dead and about two million marooned. Heavy rains and a rush of water from upstream in India's northeast swelled rivers in Bangladesh, with two main border rivers, the Surma and Kushiara, breaching a major embankment and inundating hundreds of villages. "It is one of the worst floods in the history of the country's northeast," he said. "The water level in the two rivers hit some 1.75 metres (5.7 feet) above their danger level at the height of the floods last week." The United Nations Children Fund put the extent of the damage even higher with "over four million people" in five districts in the country's northeast ...

Beautiful tiny islands around the world

Image
Ultimate Isolation Just the word ‘island’ is dreamy, conjuring images of clear water, palm trees, soft breezes and even softer sands. In many cases the reality is equal to the dream. In some, it even surpasses it. There are volcanic islands with black beaches, lesser-known Caribbean gems with pink sand and storybook animals, and landmasses dedicated to wildlife, where humans rarely tread. From islets scattered just off the coast to far-flung gems in remote locations around the globe, these are some of the world’s most beautiful small islands. Isle Royale, Michigan, USA Isle Royale is the largest island of the car-free archipelago and national park of the same name, sitting amid 450 islands scattered across Lake Superior. But, at just 46 miles (74km) long, it’s still pretty tiny. It packs in its own lakes, a lighthouse and dense patches of forest roamed by wolves and moose. Lord Howe Island, Australia World Heritage-listed Lord Howe Island is just 6.8 miles (11km) long and 1.7 miles (2....
