The Most Beautiful British Castles
Located in Derbyshire, Bolsover Castle was erected in the 17th century on the ruins of an 11th century castle built by William Peveril, a knight serving under William the Conqueror. After changing hands several times, the building was given to the Ministry of Works, who restored the premises.
The interior features several murals, some of which date from the early 17th century. While they’ve been well preserved, a vast operation has been implemented to prevent their deterioration.
Erected near Cardiff, Castell Coch was the brainchild of two men: the third Marquess of Bute and architect William Burges. At the end of the 19th century, they began reconstructing the castle on the ruins of the old one. Unfortunately, Burges died before completing his work, leaving it to others to take over.
After the WWII, the castle became a popular place to celebrate weddings.
Raby Castle is one of the most famous buildings in Northern England. Constructed in the 14th century, it’s famous for having been the residence of Cecily Neville, the mother of two kings of England, Edward IV and Richard III.
Today, the castle belongs to the Vane family, owners since 1626.
Herstmonceux Castle
Easily recognized by its red facade, Herstmonceux Castle is one of the oldest brick buildings still standing in England. Construction began in 1441 when Sir Roger Fiennes, who had fought for King Henry V in France, obtained authorization from the sovereign to crenellate his manor.
This East Sussex castle has served as an international study centre for Canada’s Queen's University since the early ‘90s.
Caerphilly Castle
Caerphilly Castle is the largest medieval castle in Wales. Its construction spanned several years (1268 to 1290). Designed by Gilbert de Clare, it served the English as defence against the Welsh.
By the beginning of the 20th century, however, the castle had lost much of its lustre. The fourth Marquess of Bute began major restoration work in 1928. Today, the site is open to the public
Warwick Castle
Without William the Conqueror, Warwick Castle might not exist. In 1068, the famous monarch ordered the construction of a wooden castle in Warwick to protect the region. However, it wasn’t until 1160 that the castle, then owned by the Newburgh family, was rebuilt in stone.
The site now belongs to Merlin Entertainments, a company which has invested significant sums in conservation and restoration work.
Portchester Castle
Probably built between 285 and 290, Portchester Castle is the best preserved Roman fort north of the Alps. During its rich history, it has been both a royal castle and a prison during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. Since 1984, the castle has been run by English Heritage, a charity responsible for managing British historical sites.
Eilean Donan Castle
Eilean Donan Castle owes much to the hard work of Lieutenant-Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap. In 1911, the officer bought the Scottish island of Donan on which the ruins of this 13th-century castle were located. He then began major reconstruction work that was not completed until 1932.
Carlisle Castle
William II ordered the construction of Carlisle Castle on the site of an ancient Roman fort in 1092. Located on the northwest border between England and Scotland, this fortress has been under siege many times during its history. Long occupied by soldiers, the site is now run by English Heritage.
Alnwick Castle
The history of Alnwick Castle starts in the early 14th century when Henry Percy took ownership of the site. With the help of his son, he transformed the Norman-style castle into a real fortress with towers and guardhouses. Work lasted about 40 years.
Today, the site welcomes, among others, students from America’s St. Cloud State University.
Highclere Castle
Since hosting the popular series Downton Abbey, Highclere Castle has become one of the world’s most popular British castles.
The property doesn’t actually belong to the Earl of Grantham, but rather to the eighth Earl of Carnarvon. Henry Herbert, the first Earl of Carnarvon, inherited the castle in 1769. He and his descendants have since undertaken several renovations.
